Zabka’s Pandora’s Box

In the beginning when William Zabka was approached with the idea of Cobra Kai. He was not on board with the story. According to the sources, it was emotionally quite painful for him to revisit the character. He mentioned in one of his public interviews, “it’s like Pandora’s Box”. It’s the snake the bit him. It took a lot of convincing but Zabka eventually came onboard.

Ralph Macchio, Protector of Legacy

Ralph in many of his interviews has said that he has been approached by different people over time for a spinoff of The Karate Kid. According to him, it was always some kind of clichéd Hollywood script. Ralph said it was very important for him to protect the legacy of the franchise and not fall into Hollywood’s money-making pit. When the producers of Cobra Kai approached him, he very much liked the idea. To see the world of The Karate kid through the eyes of Johnny Lawrence after his shameful defeat. It gives a fresh perspective to the story. It’s the journey of Johnny’s pain and redemption.

Blast from the past

During the shooting of the first movie late director, John G. Avildsen shot many scenes of the final fight. Most of these unfortunately didn’t make it to the final cut. Three decades later, when diehard fans started searching for collectables and memorabilia. They were surprised to see countless new shots of the tournaments and that of the famous crane kick kept untouched. The team of Cobra Kai is generously using these shots in the flashbacks of the series. One of those was of William Zabka’s real-life mother. She was in the stands during the final fight of the first movie.

Easter Egg that almost everyone missed

The fans of the first movie might remember. When Daniel came to the town the first friend he ever made was Fernandez. At that moment he was wearing a “Makin’ Bacon” T-shirt. In Cobra Kai, the second season’s seventh episode is when Daniel takes his students to train in a walk in a meat locker. Very few fans noticed that the boxes of meat behind them said “Fernandez Meat Company”. This implies that Fernandez successfully opened his own meat company. Small details like these create more depth in the story

Mr Miyagi’s Gift

In the first movie Mr Miyagi gifts a 1947 Ford Super Deluxe to Daniel. In real life, the same car was actually gifted to Ralph by Colombia Pictures after the third instalment of the movie. Ralph still had that car. So, when Cobra Kai was pitched Ralph made sure that the car was included in the series. “I said if we’re doing the show, I want the car to be in it,” he mentioned it to IndieWire.

Into the Cobra Kai Verse

The makers of the web series have already confirmed that Terry Silver will be in season 4. The show also confirmed that Daniel and Julie know each other. Julie Pierce, played by two times Oscar winner Hillary Shwank was the main character in the 1994’s “The Next Karate Kid”. As both of them were emotionally quite close to Mr Miyagi it’s apparent that they will know each other. Creators Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg in one of their interviews mentioned that they are thinking of creating spinoffs of Cobra Kai. “We just love The Karate Kid universe, love all the characters from back in the day, and we love the characters we’ve created. It’s hard for me to give you an exact answer to this, but what I can say is that we have a list of at least five different scenarios that we would pursue, that we could consider.”

How I Met Your Mother did it before Cobra Kai

How I Met Your Mother’s episode “The Bro Mitzvah” was aired on 29th April’13. In this, the beloved character Barney explained how he admires William Zabka in The Karate Kid. The humiliation the character went through to learn to accept defeat was most inspiring for him. This was the episode where William Zabka and Ralph Macchio both appeared in the show. It could be the very moment when the idea of looking into The Karate Kid Universe through the eyes of the antagonist was proposed for the first time.

Cobra Kai is currently streaming on Netflix. Starring Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Xolo Maridueña, Mary Mouser and Martin Kove and others. It has formed a huge fan following in just three seasons. With the fourth season under production, fans cannot wait for more.
